Assassin’s Creed III

On sale October 30th, 2012. Pre-order today for exclusive content!

Assassin’s Creed III, which is set to release in a few weeks (October 30th, 2012), is the newest in the AC series. Although, it won’t be quite the same. There is a new main character taking Ezio’s place and his name is Connor. Not only that, it’s in a whole different time period. No more ancient Rome, say hello to the American Colonies circa 1775 in the midst of the American Revolution.

Now, when I first heard about the new game and how much it would be changed I thought, wow this is going to suck. How can you replace the epic Ezio Auditore De Firenze with this new “Connor”, change the whole story, and expect me to like it? That makes it a completely different game. I was already so into all of the old characters and what was going on in the plot. You can’t just take that all and throw it away!

Well, NEWS FLASH! They didn’t. When I received my copy of GameInformer and read the Assassin’s Creed III article I was blown away. The game promises that although it’s in a different place and time, it all stems from the same original Brotherhood. The plot might be different and feature a new main character but it all comes back to being an assassin who seeks justice! After you get over the obvious changes you will see that the game still has everything you loved about it, only BETTER.

Connor

A young Connor, the main character in AC3.

Connor Kenway (pictured at the right), whose tribal name is Ratohnhake:ton (pronounced Ra-doon-ha-gay-doo’), is son to a Native American mother and a British father. He is called into action when his Mohawk village is burned down. His half-blood heritage has him walking the line between fighting for his people who are being driven from their land, and participating in a war between the American colonies and the British. Historical figures such as George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and Charles Lee are confirmed by Ubisoft to be supporting characters in the game. Many REAL historical events that happened at the time will be occurring in this installment, all for you to experience!

Wondering About Desmond’s Side of the Story?

Assassin’s Creed fans will recognize the man pictured to the left as Desmond Miles and you might be questioning whether he will appear in the game. Well… Not only is he appearing in it, he will be STARRING in AC3! Assassin’s Creed III lead writer, Matt Turner, says the game will feature more Desmond than any previous entry in the series. He won’t be in a coma any longer, and he’ll be using the Animus 3.0 to access Connor’s life and memories. Also, Desmond and the Assassin Order will be trying to stop Abstergo from launching a satellite that will end the world. That’s right, you will be playing the game and trying to stop DOOMSDAY while the predicted real life doomsday in December is also right around the corner!

Now Let’s Talk Gameplay:

After 3 years of working on a new software engine Ubisoft came out with AnvilNext, specifically for AC3. The two and a half hours of cutscenes in the game were done by actors, dressed in spandex, with cameras strapped to them. All this for great animation, facial expressions, and movements. They basically made a movie. The team also made it possible to see thousands on non-player characters at once, witnessing, and even taking part in, the intense battles of the past. The weather, seasons, and time in the game are all constantly changing as well. The river even freezes over during the winter months and can be walked on for faster travel. The engine comes complete with an expanded stealth and combat system.

Connor is just as good as Ezio in the parkour department, swinging from branch to branch effortlessly.

In AC3 Connor has some intense terrain to travel through and fight in. He could be in the wilderness of the frontier, the chaos of the cities, and even the vastness of waters. In combat he needs to be capable of working in all types of surroundings, and he does a great job of it. When on the ground, Connor is stealthy and low, like a predator stalking prey. From above he can leap from tree to tree (shown in the picture to the left) with as much agility as a parkour pro.

Conner with his bow and arrow: A silent and deadly long-range weapon.

Possessing skills that he acquired from hunting in the dense forest that surrounded his home, Connor is no stranger to combat. Coupled with the training he receives from his assassin sensei while he is becoming a part of the Brotherhood, the man is a force to be reckoned with. If Connor can’t handle something with his hands then he has a deadly set of weapons that he carries with him. They consist of the dual pistols, bow and arrow (pictured on the left), tomahawk, hidden blade, musket, rope dart, and sawtooth sword (sword only comes with a pre-order of the game). His weapons allow him to be deadly from close, medium, and long-range.

“We want you to be a predator in the wilderness. We want this notion of you in the trees being invisible while a Red Coat patrol meanders in the snow below you and you’re picking them off one by one. That notion that in the frontier, in the wilderness, your enemies are ill at ease. But your character is very comfortable. This is his playground.” -Alex Hutchinson, the creative director of Assassin’s Creed 3.

The map in AC3 is more than 1.5x bigger than the map of Rome in AC Brotherhood (which is huge), and the possibilities are endless! Choose to play through the main campaign missions and you’ll only be done with ONE THIRD of the game! The other two-thirds are made up of side quests, side missions, clubs, and all sorts of things you can do! Certain actions such as trekking through the wilderness and hunting for animals in the forest could get you invited into special clubs and guilds. After hunting animals you can sell the fur and meat, although the quality of your kill does come into play. Your reward will be greater for clean kills with a knife, while sloppy shooting with a gun will earn you less for leaving bullet holes. The detail in this game is definitely impressive and coming from someone who was skeptical about the new Assassin’s Creed at first, I can officially say that I think this is going to be one of the greatest games ever!

  1. Did you play the first Assassin’s Creed, with Altair? I’ve always thought that one of the greatest strengths of the series was that there are so many possible stories to tell. The assassins have had a presence in almost every significant time period, so if they want to tell the story of an assassin in Rome, or China, or Japan, or India, or France… they can, and it will still be connected to the core story. The fight for freedom vs. oppression is really the core of it, which is why the War of Independence will be such an interesting setting (if they use it well, which the other games suggest they’re very capable of).

Much as I liked Ezio in AC2, I’m glad we’re moving on from him. Telling another person’s story, in another place, will give the game much more room to establish its own style, and not just get carried away adding stuff. Plus, the treetop stalking style you mention sounds like the return to an actually stealthy assassin that I’ve been waiting for!

    • I did play the first AC with Altair, but I played it after I had already beaten Assassin’s Creed II. After that game I knew I had to get them all because it was incredible. So I got the first one but I honestly didn’t finish it. I got about half-way through before the campaign missions got too repetitive for me. Traveling endlessly across the maps to find my assassination target and then going all the way back to the Assassin’s Den, just to get assigned another person somewhere just as far as the one before, got kind of annoying.
As the first in the series it was still a really good game though. I definitely agree with you that there are so many possible stories to tell! It definitely has the potential to be an epic, never ending franchise. As long as they keep updating the engine along with the character and setting of the story. Ezio will always be an assassin that has a special place in my heart though, because his story started my love of video games.
As for the upcoming AC, I don’t think you need to be worried about it not delivering. From what I’ve heard and read, it won’t disappoint. Connor’s story seems amazing and the Ubisoft team is really passionate about what they do, so it should be great.
I’m going to love how stealthy Conner is too! He even takes cover behind walls and under bushes as you go through the city. Not to mention one of my favorite new features, the ability to go through buildings instead of just over and around. A great asset when escaping foes on your tail.
By the way, thanks for reading AllYouCanGame! I really loved your feedback and ideas! ❤

      • In all honesty, I played the first Assassin’s Creed when it came out, and almost gave up on the series because it was repetitive and the battle system was bland and frustrating. SO glad I didn’t give up and stuck with them, because the rest have been getting better and better. Can’t wait to play this game!

  2. I started playing the series at ACII and have been told that it was such an improvement over ACI that I shouldn’t bother going back – and I haven’t. The Ezio trilogy was simply fantastic, and I recently (finally) beat Revelations a few weeks ago in preparation for ACIII. I am very excited by this game. The gameplay looks amazing, and I’m actually legitimately curious to learn more about American history. I’m a few years removed from my high school history classes, and the people at Ubisoft seem very, very diligent about their facts, so I’m actually excited for once to read the dossiers and archives.

On a personal note, though, I could give or take the Desmond stuff. I’m definitely looking forward to a Desmond-only game, when he gets to use the Assassin parkour in a place like New York City. But this whole reliving the memories of his ancestors thing is probably the most complicated and convoluted framing device in the history of video games. I think the Assassin’s Creed games would still work if it was just the historical stuff.

    • I started playing the series at AC2 as well! I had never played video games before (only watched) and that game changed everything for me. I bought a ps3 in anticipation for Brotherhood and was blown away again. I decided I needed to own the entire series so I bought the first one, which was really nothing in comparison to the others. I only got about half-way through before it got too repetitive. It wasn’t bad for being the first in the series, but you were wise not to go back to it because it really isn’t worth it. I did enjoy getting to know Altair’s story though.
Ubisoft definitely knows their stuff when it comes to history and they have great talent in making it interesting to players in the modern day world. I never thought of having a Desmond only AC, but it’s an interesting idea! Although I think I want to see him live through the memories of a couple more people before that happens.

  3. I just want to say I am newbie to blogging and absolutely loved this web site. Probably I’m planning to bookmark your site . You surely come with amazing article content. Thanks a lot for sharing your webpage.

  4. Very well written article! As much as everyone loved Ezio, I got kinda bored of him after Revelations. One mistake, his name is CONNOR… There’s no ‘e’ in it, not relevant but I don’t like it when my favourite video game character’s name is spelt wrong 😛

    • Oh and also, spotted another small error, the area you can be in for the game, is a lot bigger than 1.5 times the size of Rome in Brotherhood, you are correct is some way though. The frontier is that size but there’s also Boston and New York and the High Seas. Otherwise, good article! I enjoyed the article about Black Ops 2, though. Good work!

      • Thanks for catching that! ConnOr and I are grateful 😉 Also, in terms of size that’s the only number I found and it was from multiple different sources. It probably is even bigger though, and that’s even better 🙂 I appreciate you reading my articles and I hope to hear more from you!

  5. The Desmond stuff is probably the most important part of the story, all of the historical stuff is about him finding out how to stop the end of the world, there’ll definitely be more Desmond in this game as I read that Connor’s stuff takes up about a third of the story and too be honest it’s about time. I can’t wait to see what Desmond finally brings to the table and how the overall story will end. Also this is the last game to feature Desmond so I don’t think there’ll be a Desmond only game. Makes you wonder what they’ll have in store for the next Assassin’s Creed game after this one! (And they confirmed that they’ll be making more games after this one)

I also fully intend on buying a PS Vita just to buy the other Assassin’s Creed game they’re releasing for that too. I like you am obsessed with Assassin’s Creed, it’s a shame to see Ezio go but I feel he was given a great send off and we learned about his whole life now I’m looking to the future and it’s looking bright to me. 🙂

    • I couldn’t agree more! I didn’t know this was the last game to feature Desmond though, so thanks for mentioning that! Maybe the next games will have different descendants reliving the lives of their ancestors?! I don’t know, but that really makes me think of many possibilities! But I know whatever they do will be great, Ubisoft hasn’t disappointed me yet.
